About Crete Island Guide
Crete Island Guide is an independent, unofficial guide to visiting the island: where to base, which sights need a ticket, how the gorges, boats and buses actually work, and which tours are worth the seat. We are not the Region of Crete, the Greek Ministry of Culture, any museum, monument or park, and not a tour operator. The whole guide starts on the Crete, Greece travel guide homepage.
Why This Site Exists
Crete punishes a vague plan more than most islands. It has two airports at opposite ends of the north coast, four regional units, ticketed Minoan palaces, a gorge that opens only from May to mid-October and closes on weather alerts, and boat days that depend on the wind. A first trip that books one hotel for everything spends its week in the car.
So every price, opening hour and closed day here is read off the official page of the place itself, and where the official source says nothing, the page says not stated instead of borrowing a plausible figure from somewhere else.
Where The Information Comes From
Ticket prices, hours and free days for the archaeological sites and museums come from the Greek Ministry of Culture site odysseus.culture.gr and the museums' own pages, such as heraklionmuseum.gr. Samaria Gorge figures come from the national park's own site and the NECCA ticketing page. Island facts come from ELSTAT (the Greek statistics authority), the climate figures from thirty years of ERA5 reanalysis data, and visitor information from the Region of Crete's tourism site incrediblecrete.gr. Bus and ferry details come from the operators' own sites.
Tour prices, durations, ratings and review counts are the booking platforms' own published numbers. Each comparison states the quarter its figures are current for, and the figures are re-checked quarterly.
What We Do Not Claim
There is no invented author here and no claim that someone from this site stood in a particular queue on a particular morning. We do not operate or personally conduct these tours, and we do not inspect hotels, beaches or operators.
We hold no bookings either. Every Check Availability button hands you to the platform the tour is sold on, where the price, the terms and the cancellation window are theirs.
How The Site Pays For Itself
Tour, ticket and hotel links on this site are affiliate links: book through one and the platform pays us a commission, at the same price you would pay going there yourself. That pays for the research and buys nothing else, not placement, not a rating and not the wording of a recommendation. The networks are listed on the affiliate disclosure page.
Corrections
Site hours in Crete change with the season, boats change timetables and prices move. If a number here is out of date, write to us with what you found and when you were there. A corrected figure is worth more than a defended one.
