Samaria Gorge: The Hike, the Fee and the Way Out

Samaria Gorge is the long limestone canyon that most hiking plans on our Crete, Greece travel guide are built around, a one-way walk from a mountain plateau down to the Libyan Sea. This guide covers what the park authority actually charges, when the gates are open, how the 16 km walk breaks down, and how you get back once you reach Agia Roumeli, a logistics chain covered in full on our Samaria Gorge tickets and transport page. If the full descent is more than your day allows, Imbros Gorge covers similar White Mountain scenery in a shorter walk.

Quick answer Samaria Gorge in one minute

Samaria Gorge is a 16 km, one-way hike through Crete's White Mountains, descending 1,227 m from the Xyloskalo trailhead on the Omalos plateau to the village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. The park authority charges $5.61 (€5) per adult, free for anyone under 15, paid at either gate. Both gates open at 06:00 and close at 16:00 daily through the 1 May to 15 October season, sometimes stretching to the end of October in good weather. The walk is one-way only: there is no road out of Agia Roumeli, so every hiker finishes the day on a boat along the south coast before a bus ride back. The park closes without notice during weather alerts, so check the live status before you commit to a date.

Key takeaways

  • Book transport that already covers the fee and the boat out. The all-inclusive coach, fee and ferry package handles the whole chain in one booking, compared in full on our Samaria Gorge tickets page.
  • Start at Xyloskalo, not Agia Roumeli. Walking north to south follows the descent; climbing it the other way is far harder and most operators only run the downhill direction.
  • Budget a full day. Our routing is 5 to 7 hours on the trail plus the ANENDYK boat and KTEL bus connections detailed on our tickets page.
  • Want a shorter day in the same mountains? Imbros Gorge runs a comparable walk at roughly half the length.

What Samaria Gorge Is

The gorge is a national park cut by a seasonal river between two mountains, walked by tens of thousands of visitors a year on a single marked trail with no other way through.

A One-Way Canyon to the Sea

Samaria Gorge runs between the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and Mount Volakias in southwest Crete, in the Chania regional unit. The signed hiking route covers 16 km start to finish, 13 km through the park itself plus another 3 km on from the park exit to the village of Agia Roumeli, per samaria.gr. The trail drops 1,227 m from the Xyloskalo entrance at the top to sea level at Agia Roumeli, so the whole walk is a descent, not a there-and-back hike.

There is no exit partway down other than turning back the way you came, which is the main reason the park enforces a hard gate-closing time.

The Gates

The gorge's most photographed stretch is the narrows popularly known as the Iron Gates, where the walls close to a reported four metres apart and rise close to 300 m overhead, per Wikipedia's account of the gorge. Tour operators selling a guided walk often build their pacing around reaching this point together, as the trail is too narrow there for a group to spread out.

A National Park Since 1962

The gorge has been a National Park of Greece since 1962, created as a refuge for the kri-kri, the Cretan wild goat now largely restricted to the park and a small island off Agia Marina, and it also holds UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, per Wikipedia. The small village of Samaria once stood just inside the gorge and takes its name, along with the park's, from its old church, Ossia Maria. The last residents were relocated out in 1962 to make way for the park they had lived inside for generations.

Today the park is managed by Greece's Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA), through its Management Unit for Samaria National Park and the Protected Areas of Western Crete.

The Hike: From Xyloskalo to the Sea

The walk is a single trail with no shortcuts, so what you are actually signing up for is a long day on your feet rather than a loop you can cut short.

The Upper Section: Xyloskalo's Steps

The hike starts at Xyloskalo on the Omalos plateau with a steep run of stone and wooden steps, the steepest ground on the whole route, dropping quickly into the gorge proper. This early stretch sets the pace for most hikers' knees for the rest of the descent, since it front-loads the steepest grade rather than saving it for later.

Through the Abandoned Village and the Narrows

Past the steep opening, the trail levels into a long riverbed walk, passing the remains of the abandoned village of Samaria roughly at the gorge's midpoint, then continuing down through the Iron Gates narrows toward the park's southern exit. The riverbed is normally dry in summer, but the walking surface is loose stone the whole way, which is the main reason the hike takes longer than its distance suggests.

Who Should Think Twice

This is a demanding full-day hike on an uneven surface with a hard closing time and no vehicle access anywhere inside. Anyone with knee or ankle problems should weigh the 1,227 m of descent carefully, since downhill walking on loose stone for hours is harder on joints than the same distance on a flat path. The park gives no official minimum age or fitness guidance, so treat it as a serious hiking day rather than a casual walk, and build in the buffer this page covers below for weather and closing times.

How Much Time to Give Samaria Gorge

The park states no recommended pace. Three routings cover how people actually plan the day, from the bare hike to the full door-to-door logistics most visitors actually need.

Every routing below assumes the standard direction, Xyloskalo down to Agia Roumeli. The table is our own estimate built from the fixed 06:00 to 16:00 gate hours, not an official park figure.

Season, Gate Hours and Weather Closures

The gate hours are fixed on paper, but the season that actually runs is weather-dependent at both ends.

The Season and the Daily Window

The park runs 1 May to 15 October, sometimes extending to 31 October in favourable conditions, per samaria.gr. Both gates, Xyloskalo in the north and Agia Roumeli in the south, open at 06:00 and close at 16:00 every day the park is operating. Outside that window the gorge is closed to hikers.

Weather Closures

The park can and does close with no advance notice when a weather alert is issued, a step NECCA's own live ticketing site uses to shut both gates during storms or high fire risk. A closure like this can last for days with no fixed reopening date announced in advance, which is the single biggest reason to check the park's live status close to your travel date rather than relying on this page or any guidebook for an up-to-the-day answer.

The Quiet Start

By our own observation, the first two hours after the 06:00 opening are the quietest stretch of the whole day, before coach parties from Chania and Rethymno reach Xyloskalo. Arriving at or near opening also builds in the most buffer against the 16:00 closing time at the far end, which matters more on a slow day than a crowd-free photo.

Season and hours from samaria.gr. Live closure status from samaria-tickets.necca.gov.gr.

Getting to Xyloskalo and Away From Agia Roumeli

Reaching the start is the easy half of the day. Leaving the far end, where no road exists, is the part worth planning before you go.

Reaching Xyloskalo

Xyloskalo sits on the Omalos plateau, the gorge's north gate. Drivers can reach it by car, and KTEL runs scheduled buses from Chania toward Omalos in season, though we could not confirm a current fare for that specific route from an official page. All-inclusive tours and guided coach options both include the ride from the Chania area, which removes the need to arrange your own transport up to the plateau.

Leaving From Agia Roumeli

There is no road out of Agia Roumeli. Every hiker leaves by boat, either east to Hora Sfakion or west toward Sougia and Paleochora, then connects to a KTEL bus back toward Chania. The boat fares, the bus connections and the full timing chain are broken down in detail on our Samaria Gorge tickets page, since this exit leg is the part independent hikers most often underestimate.

Five Things Most Visitors Do Not Know

Quick, sourced facts for the ride back to Chania.

  • The gorge and its park both take their name from a tiny Byzantine church, Ossia Maria, inside the now-abandoned village of Samaria that once stood at the gorge's midpoint (Wikipedia).
  • The last villagers living inside the gorge were relocated out in 1962, the same year the area became Greece's national park, to create the protected area hikers walk through today (Wikipedia).
  • The famous narrows, popularly called the Iron Gates, are reported at only about four metres apart while the cliffs above soar close to 300 m, making it one of the narrowest stretches of any walkable gorge in Europe (Wikipedia).
  • The park exists partly to protect the kri-kri, a wild goat now found almost nowhere else on Crete outside this gorge and one small offshore island (Wikipedia).
  • The hike is one-way by design. There is no official route back up through the gorge, which is why every exit plan on this page ends with a boat, never a return walk.

Dos and Don'ts at Samaria Gorge

Small decisions that matter more than any gear list once you are on the trail.

Do

  • Start at the 06:00 opening if you can. It buys the biggest safety margin against the 16:00 gate closing and the quietest first two hours on the trail, by our observation.
  • Carry more water than feels necessary. There is shade in parts of the gorge, but no official water points are listed along the route.
  • Wear broken-in hiking shoes with ankle support. The riverbed trail is loose stone for most of its length, not packed dirt.
  • Book your boat and bus connection out of Agia Roumeli before you start walking, covered on our tickets page, rather than figuring it out on arrival.
  • Check the live closure status the morning of your hike. Weather alerts can shut both gates with no notice.

Don't

  • Don't start the hike from Agia Roumeli expecting an easier climb. Walking the gorge uphill against the 1,227 m of descent is far harder and most guided tours only run the downhill direction.
  • Don't plan a same-day return to the north side. There is no road out of Agia Roumeli, so the only way back to Chania is by boat and bus.
  • Don't assume the park is open just because it is inside the May to October window. Weather alerts close both gates without warning at any point in the season.
  • Don't underestimate the final 3 km. The 13 km inside the park ends at a gate, not at Agia Roumeli itself, and tired legs often find that last stretch the hardest part of the day.
  • Don't treat this as a casual family walk. The park gives no minimum age or fitness guidance, and the terrain, heat and distance make it a serious hiking day.

Samaria Gorge Questions

Is the Samaria Gorge hike difficult?

Yes, by most standards. It is a 16 km one-way walk descending 1,227 m on a loose riverbed trail, normally taking 5 to 7 hours. The difficulty is less the distance than the sustained downhill grade on uneven stone, which is harder on knees and ankles than a flat trail of the same length.

Why is Samaria Gorge closed?

Most closures outside the 1 May to 15 October season are simply the park following its fixed operating window. Within the season, the park authority also closes both gates without notice during weather alerts, a closure that can run for several days with no fixed reopening date given in advance.

Is Samaria Gorge worth visiting?

For hikers who want Crete's best-known canyon walk and don't mind a demanding full day, yes. It is the longest and most dramatic of the island's walkable gorges, with the narrows and the abandoned village of Samaria as its two main landmarks. Anyone short on time or fitness should compare it against the shorter Imbros Gorge first.

How long does it take to hike the Samaria Gorge?

Our routing is 5 hours for a fast pace and 6 to 7 hours at an average pace, covering the 16 km from Xyloskalo to Agia Roumeli. Add the coach there and the boat and bus back, and a full door-to-door day runs 10 to 13 hours, detailed on our tickets page.

How much does it cost to enter Samaria Gorge?

The park authority charges $5.61 (€5) per adult, free for anyone under 15, paid at either gate. Our all-inclusive tour cards bundle that fee with the coach and the ferry for a higher combined price, covered on our tickets page.

Can you walk Samaria Gorge in one day?

Yes, it is designed as a single-day, one-way hike. There is no overnight option inside the park, and the gate's 06:00 to 16:00 hours mean the entire walk, boat and bus connection has to fit inside one long day.
